John McCain: “Putin is our enemy”
President Putin is not an ally and not even a competitor of the United States, but an enemy. American Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain made this statement on twitter. According to McCain, Putin put himself in this position, partly because of “the invasion of Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimea” and through his decision to support Syrian President Assad.
According to John McCain, the Russian president is also responsible for manipulating the American elections and undermining democracies around the world. He calls on Trump to hold his Russian colleague accountable for these actions during the Helsinki meeting next week. If he does not do that, then according to McCain, this is an indictment of his role as guardian of the American leadership in the world.
#Putin is not our friend nor merely a competitor. Putin is our enemy—not b/c we wish it so, but b/c he has chosen to be. He chose to invade Ukraine & annex Crimea. He chose to help Assad slaughter Syrians. He chose to attack our election & undermine democracies around the world.

It is up to President Trump to hold #Putin accountable for his actions during the meeting in #Helsinki. Failure to do so would be a serious indictment of his stewardship of American leadership in the world. https://t.co/SahcB2ahCC
